Common Snakes in Virginia Virginia is a place that is very amazing for snake survival. The snakes occupy different places and you might find them concentrated in one place and none on another place. The mountainous environment, woods, plateau and waters in Virginia are the places you can find snakes. There are two types of snakes in Virginia; Venomous and non-venomous. The non-venomous snakes are the most common and many people come across them in different places like in gardens, backyards and in grassy places. The venomous snakes are hard to encounter since they normally reside in the wild and hidden places where they cannot be found easily.

Non-venomous snakes are the most common. They are found in many places and they are harmless. The Eastern Garter snake can eat a variety of food including frogs, worms and slugs. The Rat snake is also a common snake. It is docile and many sake lovers enjoy having them as pets. The Northern Water Snake resembles venomous cottonmouth but it is harmless unless you try to capture it. The Northern Black Racer is also a common harmless snake.

The Eastern Hognose has a nose raised upwards to enable digging in moist soils. The Ring-Necked snake is another common snake that readily fits into its environment. The snake is harmless and does not want any disturbances from anyone. The Northern Scarlet is found in farm lands and in open forest regions. The Northern Brown snake is normally found in backyards and its main food is worms, slugs and bugs. The Eastern worm snake is found in rotting woods and leaves hunting for snails, earthworms and bugs to eat.



The Mole King snake is kept as pets. They are however not very docile but they are harmless with no venom. The Eastern smooth Earth hunts for earthworms and beetles in loose soils. There are other few types of snakes that are found near homes but not very often. The snakes like Eastern Mud snake, Smooth Green snake, Red Corn snake and the Queen snake, Rainbow snake, Rough Earth Snake, Glossy Crayfish snake, Northern pine snake which can also be found in different places of Virginia and people can come across them slithering in different places. Non-venomous snakes do not like being interrupted and if you came across one you should let it slither away.

Venomous snakes in Virginia.

Virginia also has venomous snake species. The snakes are dangerous and a single bite can lead to death if victims are not given medical care with immediate effect. As much as they are venomous, they do not attack people easily as they are found mostly hidden in the wild places. Victims of their bites are normally those who go into the woods. There are three venomous snakes in Virginia which includes the Rattle snake, The Eastern cottonmouth and the Northern copperhead. People should be able to identify the snakes that can be found near homes and the venomous snake types in order to be safe.
